First off, I would like to apologize for taking so long to update the blog. No excuses...but we'll make sure to post weekly updates (at a minimum) moving forward.
The past two weeks, I have been busy with outpatient therapy here in Atlanta at the Shepherd Center. The highlights from the last two weeks are:
-Continued work (and progress) on transfers of all kinds. As noted before, a transfer is a movement from a wheelchair to another seating surface like a car seat, a bed, a sofa, a piece of fitness equipment, etc. Transfers are getting to be more fluid, efficient and faster...all good things as improving transfers is my most important goal in the outpatient Day Program.
-My take-home wheelchair arrived this past Tuesday. The wheelchair is a TiLite, model ZRA (pictures to follow). The new chair is lighter and more efficient than the loaner manual chair I was in for about 2 1/2 months. Plus, it's faster too...all good things!!
-Learning more advanced "dance" moves at a Shepherd sponsored Valentines Day party. With a little more practice, Courtney and I will be able to get down and boogie at weddings and the like.
-Playing in a group dodgeball game with other dayprogrammers and therapists. No head shots were aloud, but body and chair shots were fair game. It was fun, good exercise and worked on chair mobility.
-Continued use of a standing frame here at Shepherd. Again, these devices mechanically stand the user up so they are weight-bearing through their legs. A few pictures of me in a standing frame were previously posted on the blog for your review.
-Continued strength and endurance with cardio equipment and in group "pushes". I'm able to use a stationary handcycle or other hand-operated fitness equipment to raise my heartrate for up to 30 minutes a couple times per day. A large improvement...10 minutes use to be a struggle. But as noted above, stength and endurance are progressing nicely.
Those are the higlights from the last two weeks. Busy as usual in therapy with continued gains in strength, mobility and endurance.
We attended a Shepherd sponsored outing to the Philips Arena to watch the Atlanta Thrashers play against the Vancouver Canucks in an NHL hockey game. Unfortunately the home team lost in a 1-2 game, but we enjoyed touring the Arena and the CNN center.
The weather has been beautiful! Courtney and I revisited Stone Mountain to enjoy some of the fresh air and push around the paved paths.
Last but not least, I received another letter from a person I would like to call a friend....Lance Armstrong. He wished me continued success in my recovery. He also mentioned he and the folks at the Lance Armstrong Foundation(LAF) are keeping me in their thoughts and prayers. This was a little encouragement from a person that I greatly admire.
Courtney and I also have had to opportunity to continue sampling many of Atlanta's eateries with our friends. One of our new favorites is The Italian Restaurant, BRIO. The food is very good and reminds us of the great Italian restaurants home in New York. On Valentines Day, our treat was enjoying some cheese and chocolate fondue at The Melting Pot(a restaurant in downtown Atlanta).
Thank you again to our families and friends for your continued support and encouragement. In that light, Courtney recently became Shepherd Centers newest volunteer. She assists where needed and mainly focuses on helping others adjust, while I am in therapy. Courtney enjoys volunteering and the wonderful people she meets! It is a small attempt to pay it forward!
That is all that is fit to print!
Thank you,
Dana

Hi Dana! Our computer has been down for about a month, and we've been getting updates from my mom. We are elated to see the continued good news coming from Atlanta. Scott is even more excited to see that you are working on your golf game! We certainly weren't surprised to read that Court has become a volunteer at Shepard. Her heart is even more beautiful than her smile! We love you both!
Love, Maegan and Scott
Hello,
First of all, Dana don't ever feel the need to apologize for not updating the blog. You have quite the schedule and can do the updating on your own time. Yes, we love hearing from you, but only when it fits into your day.
Life sounds busy - that is good. How is the new wheelchair? Hope it is all you expected.
We think of you all often and wish you well.
Love from the Lakes

It is so wonderful to read about so many "good things" in a single update! Dana, we agree with Jenn and Mike that no one ever doubted that you would succeed. Your hard work has truly paid off. You and Courtney are an incredibly inspiring couple.....neither one of you never ceases to amaze us!! You are always in our thoughts and prayers.

Hi Dana & Courtney,
Like the rest of us out there I check in when I can to read about all of your successes. But don't worry about when there is a short lapse in a posting. The both of you have accomplished so much over the last 5 months. Keep up the great work!!! You both are truly amazing individuals and make an awesome team.
If you are interested in some other good restaurants I've eaten at Atlanta Fish Market (near Peachtree NE) or my co-workers recommend Kyma (Greek). They also suggested checking out the Buckhead Life website for things to see or try when they give you a day off.
Hope you guys get to come home to Horseheads soon!!!
Take care,
Kristin M.

Have to say - you are looking good in the pics. I thought for awhile I would be in better shape than you for the first time in ..well, ever. But it looks like you are back to being able to kick my *** again (it was the picture of the bicep).
Email be back direct if you can - dsiglin@cio.com
Since I live in Hopkinton - I'm thinking you - Boston Marathon - 2009?

So sitting on my tushy here on bed rest makes me miss you guys like crazy! I check the blog often, cause, well, what else am I going to do while the little girl continues to cook (yes, I am using Nicole's phrase)
We have about 10 more weeks until her arrival and I can't wait to introduce her to the most amazing two people I have ever known! I loved to hear that Courtney is helping out, which really was no surprise to anyone! By the way, Dana, you look more handsome then ever in your pics. Continue to progress, so we can have you home real soon!
Love you,
Missi
Dana!
Glad to hear you are doing well. You are always in our thoughts and prayers back here in Horseheads. We know how strong of a positive mental outlook you have and your progress comes as no surprise to me at all in light of this. Its great to read that your coaching high schoolers again (although I have to admit I'm a bit jealous of them!) Looking forward to much more good news to come!
Dana, keep up the great work. We will see you when you get back to work.
Don......
Hi there! My name is Rebecca Foulger. I heard about your blog through a co-worker in upstate NY. My sister is in the recovery process from a TBI accident in Aug. '06. (www.natfoulger.blogspot.com)...I can relate to much of what you and your family have endured...it is nice to connect with another young individual as determined with the recovery process as my sister is. Best of luck with your continued therapies-keep on pushing!
